The Quetzal Life was inspired by the Resplendent Quetzal, a bird considered to be sacred in ancient Mayan and Aztec cultures. The quetzals were the “gods of the air” and they represented symbols of light, freedom and wealth. In this artwork I paint in three’s; the number three represents an alignment in energies that bring balance in the world. Three quetzals, three moons, three trees, three fruits, and so on.

In life, we try to find balance in three main categories: 1. family & friends, 2. work/fulfillment, and 3. in ourselves (wellbeing and health). It can become an overwhelming task to be present and mindful for all three of these. One gets in the way of the other two, vice versa. It is almost like a musical composition played in staccato. Each note fighting to be heard, to come first, to be recognized.

The three moons, trees, and fruit are intertwined with feminine energies such as intuition, creativity, empathy, nurturing, wisdom and mystery. This painting is a reminder that the energies we surround ourselves with affect us in every aspect of our lives whether positive or negative. It is important to be mindful and present to find that balance in our lives. We ask ourselves, which aspect of our lives do we pour most of our focus on, which one deserves our attention more.

Just like the meditative and repetitive markings on my paintings, the quetzal bird has repetitive and distinctive markings in its plumage. I strive to show you the beauty that surrounds this world and how this beauty is slowly disappearing. The quetzal is an endangered species and it is important we help restore balance to the world so that these beautiful creatures don’t become extinct.
